Railway link with Myanmar by 2014 |

Star Report: The government is going to construct a rail line from Dohazari in Chittagong to Gundhum in Myanmar via Cox's Bazar to establish link with the proposed Trans-Asia Railway corridor. The Executive Committee of National Economic Council (Ecnec) meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina approved a Tk 1,852 crore project to construct a single track rail line from Dohazari in Chittagong to Ramu in Cox's Bazar and from there to Gundhum in Myanmar.

Journalists protest at police assault, constable suspended |

Staff Correspondent: Journalists of Cox’s Bazar working for local and national media organisations on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner, demanding exemplary punishment to the police men who beat up a journalist on Monday. Ahmed Gias, district Correspondent of daily Jai Jai Din and daily Azadi, was beaten in front of Cox’s Bazar BNP office on Monday afternoon when he was taking a photograph. The deputy commissioner, Mohammaad Gias Uddin Ahmed, told journalists that the district police authorities had already suspended the accused police constable —- Mohammad Sohel — for beating the journalist. The police also formed an inquiry committee headed by Hamidul Hoque, a senior assistant superintendent of the police. The injured journalist, Gias was undergoing treatment at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. The journalists of the district town held a protest meeting presided over by president of Cox’s Bazar Press Club Badiul Alam at Cox’s Bazar Pourashava premises on Monday evening.

Daily Star Report: Bangabandhu Safari Park in Dulahazara, Cox's Bazar is now the new home ground for the starred tortoises, which were seized from the capital's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport early Monday. “We have sent them to Dulahazara Safari Park on Monday evening. They have already been released at the park,” said Dr Tapan Kumar Dey, conservator of forest at the Wildlife and Nature Conservation Circle.

Staff Correspondent: The Bay of Bengal remains rough and all fishing trawlers were advised to return to the shore as the depression formed in the southwest at about 1,300 km off the coast intensified into a cyclonic storm yesterday. Following a spell of heat waves across the country, the cyclone named “Laila” is possibly bringing the monsoon with it, a weather expert said. “However, it still remains at a safe distance and might take two more days to approach the coast. At present it appears to be moving towards the coasts of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh but might change its course, any moment,” said Sujit Dev, an eminent meteorological expert of the country. “If it catches the westerly then it might strike the coast of Bangladesh but otherwise approach the Indian coast,” he said.
